Become an ISP Policy Scholar

Open to graduate and undergraduate social work students.

ISP Policy Scholars is a national program for students who want to do more than study policy. You will practice it under the guidance of a policy mentor. Over one cycle, you will build skill across six core competencies and finish by being formally installed as an ISP Policy Scholar.

What Scholars Get
  • Installation as an ISP Policy Scholar
You are formally installed as an ISP Policy Scholar, a national designation that goes on your resume, your graduate or post-graduate school applications, and your professional profile.
  • Mentorship from People Doing the Work
Direct access to practitioners and ISP leaders who spend their careers moving policy.
  • A National Network
A cohort of students across the country working on the same questions you are, connected to the wider ISP membership behind them.

What You Will Learn to Do
  • Translate and disseminate: Turn research into something a decision-maker will actually read.
  • Apply a racial equity and anti-oppression lens: Read any policy for who it serves and who it leaves out.
  • Advocate and organize: Move an issue from a concern into a campaign.
  • Build political efficacy: Act with well-founded confidence that your voice counts.
  • Engage in electoral activism: Connect elections to the outcomes you care about.
  • Engage legislatively: Approach lawmakers on their terms, and be heard.   The fully virtual program lasts an academic year and will require approximately 2-4 hours a month.
